W(h)ither Yorkshire?

We received recently an enquiry from someone who had been out walking with his wife in Saddleworth, near Oldham, Lancashire, when they spotted this unusual milestone in a wall.

He wanted to know whether it was listed in our repository as he had not been able to find it.

The milestone is indeed listed, having the National ID number YW_XSAD, which places it in the old county of Yorkshire. Saddleworth used to be in Yorkshire and only became part of Lancashire in the 1974 county boundaries reorganisation. Our enquirer was not aware that we are using the pre-1974 counties for our classification and had been looking in the North West regional data file that contains Lancashire

This is indeed an unusual milestone and we would be interested in any other examples of this style.
